Although
I paint landscapes, I find that I usually return to the
face and figure in my painting. Most of my paintings are
based on drawings done in live model groups and most of
my subjects are women. I began painting late in life following
a business career but I was always fascinated with people's
faces and would think about their facial features and where
the shadows would fall when the head would move. A friend
once said that all those years I was at business meetings
thinking about people's faces I was actually "painting
their faces in my mind" and I believe that was an
insightful statement. My mediums are primarily oil and
encaustic. |
| on
the importance of art: |
After
so many years of pursuing a career not related to art
I am now in an especially peaceful and fulfilled state
doing what I believe I was ultimately meant to do.
I would be miserable without art in my life whether
I am producing it or viewing it, so if that is true
for me it must be true for countless others in our
society. If others don't know it yet, then it's up
to the rest of us to provide opportunities where all
ages can learn the rewards that come from exposure
to the arts.
